Education has always been one of the most vital factors for the progress of a society. More so, in this era of rapidly advancing science and technology and boundless communication, being educated is an obligation because without that you will not be able to get your voice heard. Unfortunately, in places like Quetta, Balochistan which is a remote city in a developing country, education has remained inaccessible to a lot of boys and specially girls who have grown up to become parents now. Some of the women have not even received the most basic education and face lots of hardships in day to day life dealings. Due to this, most of these parents find it hard to understand the mindset of their children and this has affected parenting very much and increase gab between mother and her children. Moreover, the socio-economic condition of women is also not in a good shape due to lack of education and the uncertain situation of Quetta have limited Hazara community of working outside the town.
Thus, to cater for the needs of the society Women Initiators started a campaign of providing free basic education to the unschooled female parents to help them obtain basic education which can prove helpful in their daily lives and train them to get along with the changing traits of the society by improving their communication skills which will help them in managing their lives. In addition, as a part of this initiative informative seminars have also been conducted to give awareness on different topics such as women’s health, management of home budget and entrepreneurship concepts to these females who already having small business and works at home.
Women Initiators’ purpose of initiating the Adult Learners’ Class are to have the following outcomes for the progress of society:
A survey has been conducted after one year completion of the course by answering to questions asked from the enrolled women. Change has occurred as “I can now read and understand the news headline written at the bottom of television” said Masooda from Foundation Four, another student Wajiha from Foundation Five explains “now she is able to read and reply text messages, used symbols for saving contacts but now can read and save names by own, and help her son who is in class one by taking his dictation and reading his book with him”. Many other improvements have also occurred like they are able to do their daily activities without asking for help from their son or daughter such as dialing phone number from contact, reading and writing the whole family members name, understand the names of brands and different workshops conducted about issues suffered by women like health issues (menstruation problems, pregnancy, menopause etc), early child marriages and their complications, management of home budget, raising of children focusing on their education and many more are leading them to the knowledgeable person according to the terms and condition of modern society. Moreover these classes will decrease the mindset gap between a child and a mother and increase the understanding level of both generations.
In order to sustain ALC for women, a planning is in the process to make the enrolled women ALC’s Alumni for which they are to conduct classes for those women who cannot join the ALC. The Alumni will gather these women from her circumstance and teach them at her home. The alumni will receive the teaching materials from WI’s office. The Alumni’s will be awarded on the monthly basis to keep their interest and motivation for the cause. In addition, monthly report or update will be collected to meet the solutions. This will multiply the chain of providing basic education to every home, after a semester (two months) these alumni will again be gather at ALC where we will discuss the challenges and solutions, materials needed and ask their students to join the workshops organized for them for more information.
Adult Learners Class now have 80+ students, on continuation of chain if only 20 students are becoming our Alumni with collecting 5 more students at their home than the chain is multiplied to 100 homes which shows that from now after five years, we will be able to provide basic education to as many home as possible.
Women Initiators’ (WI) main objectives are awareness and socio-economic development of women. In Phase One: We are providing our students the basic knowledge and awareness through Adult learners’ class. At the end of this class we would welcome our skilled alumni who want to continue working with us on the socio-economic development. Phase Two: At this stage WI’s goal is the socio-economic development of women where they can enhance their respective skills such as, preserving the traditional handicrafts and introducing them to bigger market.
